What is a chalazion?
Chalazion, also known as meibomian cyst, is a cyst in the eyelid caused by inflammation of the blocked meibomian gland. Meibomian glands are sebaceous glands on the eyelid that produce an oily substance that prevents evaporation of the eye’s tear film and lubricates the eye. A most common condition resembling chalazion is the sty. The major difference between the two is that chalazion forms away from the lid margin and is painless, while a sty forms at the eyelid margin and is painful.
How is a chalazion formed?
The chalazion forms in three steps: blockage of the meibomian gland, then retention of the sebum secretions due to blockage of the meibomian gland and lastly, formation of the cyst or chalazion from the pent up secretions. Over time, this cyst turns into a hard node.
Clinical picture of chalazion
Chalazion presents itself as a painless swelling in the eyelid. On examination, a small, hard, non-tender node in the eyelid away from the lid margin is felt. In most cases, chalazion is formed on the upper eyelid. A large chalazion may press on the cornea and cause blurred vision. Other features that may attend include heaviness of the eyelid, eyelid tenderness and light sensitivity. Sometimes chalazion resolves on its own. In a few cases, there are chances of calcification of the chalazion. In others, a secondary infection may occur in the chalazion leading to formation of hordeolum internum.
